Chicago – April 15, 2025

Americans usually need to file their taxes by April 15. However, if you live in an area hit by a disaster declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), you now have more time. For those in these areas, the deadline has been extended to May 1.

People in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, which were severely affected by hurricanes last year, automatically get the extra time to file. This extension also applies to many counties in Tennessee and Virginia.

In addition, those who were impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year have until October 15 to submit their tax forms. Some people in Alaska and New Mexico may also qualify for extended deadlines.

Tax Day can be stressful for many people, especially if they are worried about late fees or mistakes on their tax returns. If you need an extension for other reasons, or want to see if you qualify for an automatic extension, you can visit the IRS website for more details.
