Columbia University announced on Tuesday it will lay off nearly 180 staff members whose positions were funded by federal research grants canceled by the Trump administration earlier this year. The $400 million in grant funding was withdrawn in March amid allegations that the university failed to adequately protect Jewish students from antisemitic harassment linked to campus protests.

Acting President Claire Shipman described the layoffs as a difficult but necessary step to preserve the university’s financial stability and maintain its core research mission. She noted that the affected employees represent about 20% of those supported by the terminated grants and that Columbia continues to negotiate with federal agencies to restore funding while exploring alternative resources.

The administration’s funding cuts have forced Columbia to reduce its research infrastructure and make tough decisions about resource allocation during a challenging period for higher education nationwide. Despite some concessions made by Columbia in response to federal demands, including policy changes and increased campus security, the restoration of funds remains uncertain146.
