Putin Won’t Attend Ukraine Peace Talks, Kremlin Confirms
Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided not to attend the peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Istanbul. Instead, Putin’s close aide, Vladimir Medinsky, will lead the Russian delegation. This move indicates that Russia might not be taking the talks seriously, as Medinsky was also part of the Russian team in the unproductive 2022 Istanbul talks.
Trump’s Reaction
US President Donald Trump isn’t surprised by Putin’s decision, saying, “I didn’t think it was possible for Putin to go if I’m not there.” Trump had previously suggested attending the talks himself but has now decided not to go since Putin won’t be there.
Ukraine’s Stance
Zelenskyy was ready to meet Putin in Turkey, saying that if Putin doesn’t show up, it would prove he doesn’t want to end the war. Zelenskyy is set to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.
Talks Continue Without Putin
Although Putin won’t attend, his aide Medinsky will be joined by other high-ranking officials, including Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin. The US will also be represented by special envoy Steve Witkoff.
What’s Next?
The talks might not be very productive without Putin’s presence. Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s next steps depend on the Kremlin delegation. The world is watching to see if these talks can bring any positive change to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
