Austria has triumphed in the 69th Eurovision Song Contest, with “Wasted Love,” performed by the talented JJ, claiming the top prize. The grand final took place in Basel, Switzerland, on Saturday, where JJ’s powerful performance outshone 25 other contenders.
“Wasted Love” shares some similarities with last year’s winning song, Nemo’s “The Code,” especially in its use of dramatic, operatic vocals. However, unlike the 2024 winner, which had a club anthem vibe, “Wasted Love” starts softly and builds to an intense finale, with the beats only appearing toward the end. Like Nemo, JJ is 24 years old. He co-wrote the song with Teodora Spiric and Thomas Turner.
This marks Austria’s third win in the prestigious competition. Previous victories include Udo Jürgens in 1965 and Conchita Wurst in 2014. Israel earned second place, while Estonia took third.
In his victory speech, JJ emphasized the need for “more love” in the world. Following this success, Austria is set to host the 70th Eurovision Song Contest.
