Chicago – August 06, 2025

Hundreds of people gathered in Pakistan-administered Kashmir on Tuesday to mark the sixth anniversary of India’s revocation of the region’s semi-autonomous status.

The protesters condemned the August 5, 2019, decision by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strip Kashmir of its special status and called for the restoration of statehood to the disputed Himalayan region, which has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from Britain in 1947. Both nations claim the region in its entirety, and the dispute has led to two wars between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

The largest protest took place in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where hundreds of civil society members and political party supporters participated.

Meanwhile, in Srinagar, Indian-controlled Kashmir, members of India’s opposition Congress party also held a rally demanding the restoration of the region’s statehood.
