Trump Vows to Back Ukraine Security Guarantees

US President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to support security guarantees for Ukraine, a move that could bring hope to the war-torn nation. This development comes ahead of a crucial US-Russia summit in Alaska, where Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders have been intensifying efforts to prevent any deal that would leave Ukraine vulnerable to further Russian attacks.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump emphasized that NATO should not be part of the security guarantees designed to protect Ukraine from future attacks. Instead, Trump suggested that the US and willing allies should provide security guarantees. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed Trump’s commitment, stating that there would be robust security guarantees. However, the specifics of these guarantees remain unclear.

The US-Russia summit on Friday takes place at a critical moment in the war, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Zelenskiy and his allies have expressed cautious optimism about Trump’s willingness to support security guarantees, but the outcome of the summit remains uncertain.
