Donald Trump announced that the United States will boycott the upcoming G20 summit scheduled to be held in South Africa later this month.
Citing widely discredited claims of persecution and illegal land confiscation against Afrikaners and white farmers in South Africa, Trump called the decision to host the summit there a “total disgrace.” He stated on his social media platform that no U.S. government officials would attend the summit as long as these alleged human rights abuses persist.
Trump has repeatedly accused South Africa of discriminating against its white minority, claims that South African authorities and Afrikaner leaders have strongly refuted.
Originally, Vice President JD Vance was supposed to represent the U.S. at the summit, but it has since been confirmed he will not attend. South Africa’s foreign ministry described the U.S. decision as “regrettable,” emphasizing that no political faction within the country has alleged any genocide or systemic persecution.
The G20 summit will now take place in Johannesburg without U.S. representation, while Trump has expressed eagerness to host next year’s G20 summit at his Miami golf resort.
