New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced he will move into historic Gracie Mansion with his wife, Rama, upon taking office in January. The decision ends speculation about whether the progressive leader, known for his rent-stabilized Astoria apartment, would forgo the official mayoral residence.
Mamdani cited family safety and the need to focus on his affordability agenda as key factors. “This decision came down to our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for,” he stated. He expressed fondness for Astoria’s community vibrancy but affirmed it will inspire his work.
Built in 1799, the Federal-style mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side features five bedrooms, a ballroom, and East River views. Most NYC mayors have resided there since World War II, offering enhanced security.
