Chicago – July 14, 2026

The Trump administration has directed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to suspend most vehicle stops following two fatal shootings linked to enforcement actions, according to officials familiar with the decision. The move comes amid growing concerns over agent safety and the escalating risks associated with routine traffic-based operations.

Authorities confirmed that the recent incidents involved armed confrontations during vehicle stops, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and raising alarm within federal law enforcement agencies. In response, ICE leadership has instructed officers to limit such stops unless deemed critical to public safety or tied to high-priority investigations.

The temporary policy shift is intended to reduce exposure to unpredictable roadside encounters, which officials say have become increasingly dangerous. While the directive does not halt all field operations, it emphasizes alternative enforcement strategies, including surveillance and targeted arrests.

Critics argue the decision could weaken immigration enforcement, while supporters view it as a necessary step to protect officers and civilians. ICE has not indicated how long the suspension will remain in effect but stated that operational guidelines will continue to be reviewed.
