Chicago – September 14, 2026

Former President Barack Obama says Democrats need a “very clear plan” for artificial intelligence as the technology rapidly transforms the economy, politics and everyday life.

Speaking about the growing influence of AI, Obama argued that Democrats should develop a clear policy framework that addresses both the opportunities and risks created by the technology. He emphasized the need to ensure AI benefits workers and the broader public while preventing potential harms.

The comments come as governments and lawmakers around the world debate how to regulate powerful AI systems. Concerns include job displacement, misinformation, privacy, copyright and the concentration of technological power among major companies.

Obama’s remarks also highlight the political challenge facing Democrats as AI becomes an increasingly important issue for voters and businesses. With rapid advances expected in the coming years, the former president suggested that Democrats cannot afford to remain vague about their approach.

His call could add pressure on party leaders to present a detailed and practical AI agenda ahead of future elections.
