Saudi Health Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel said more than 1,300 people have died this year walking long distances without proper sun protection while performing Hajj – 83 percent without permission.
Among the dead were several elderly and chronically ill.
The Minister of Health emphasized the significant efforts of the competent authorities to raise awareness of the dangers of heat stress and the importance of preventive measures.
He added: “Our heartfelt condolences to their families… All reports were collected, the relatives of the deceased were informed and the person was identified, although initially no personal data or identification documents were received. Proper processes were followed to identify, bury and honor the deceased, and death certificates were issued.”
Health workers performed more than 465,000 health care procedures, including 141,000 for people who could not perform Hajj.
” This achievement was made possible thanks to the coordinated efforts of the health system and the security forces of Hajj, and no epidemics or widespread diseases were observed,” said the minister.
