AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi sparked controversy on Tuesday after praising a conflict-hit West Asian country while taking his oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha. His remarks caused an uproar from the treasury benches, prompting the Chair to order the comments be expunged from the record.
Owaisi defended his slogans outside the House, telling reporters there was nothing wrong with him saying, “Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine.” He argued that other members also make various statements during oaths, questioning why his remarks were singled out. “Tell me the provision of the Constitution? You should also listen to what others say. I said what I had to. Read what Mahatma Gandhi had said about Palestine,” he stated.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju mentioned receiving complaints from some members regarding Palestine. The situation highlighted differing opinions among the members about what can be said during the oath-taking ceremony. Owaisi stood firm on his stance, insisting that his words aligned with his views and historical perspectives.
