Chicago – June 28, 2024
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off in Thursday night’s first debate of the 2024 campaign. The question of age was a big topic for both candidates.
Biden, who is 81, is the oldest American president ever. He took office at age 78. Trump, now 78, would be the second-oldest president if he wins again, starting his term at the same age Biden did.
Biden talked about his economic successes when asked if he was too old to serve. “I spent half my career being criticized for being the youngest person in politics, and now I’m the oldest,” Biden said. He noted that Trump is only three years younger “but a lot less competent.” Biden told voters to “just look at the record, what I’ve done.”
Trump replied about his physical and mental fitness, cognitive tests and golf achievements. “You have to be quite smart, and you have to be able to hit the ball a long way,” Trump said.
Despite the age-related comments, both candidates tried to highlight their achievements and prove they were ready to lead the country.
