On Monday, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi fiercely criticized the BJP in the Lok Sabha, claiming the ruling party’s leaders are not true Hindus because they spread “violence and hate” all the time. This sparked significant protests from the BJP members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused Gandhi of calling all Hindus violent.
Gandhi responded, saying he was only talking about the BJP and that neither the party, the RSS, nor Modi represent all Hindus. During Gandhi’s hour-and-40-minute speech, Modi intervened twice, and five cabinet ministers interrupted him. Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanded an apology from Gandhi for labelling the Hindu community as violent.
Gandhi said, “It is not just one religion that talks about courage. In fact, all our religions talk about courage.” His debut speech as the leader of the opposition was watched by his mother, Sonia Gandhi and sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, from the visitors’ gallery.
