President Joe Biden and his team are working hard to manage the fallout from a poor debate performance that has raised concerns about his age and mental sharpness. Many Democrats worry this could affect his chances for re-election.
On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, “The president is focused and committed to staying in the race.” She emphasized that Biden is dedicated to delivering for the American people.
To address the concerns, the campaign and White House leaders held meetings and sent memos to staff. White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients organized an all-staff call to calm fears and boost morale. Biden also joined a campaign call, assuring his team, “I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win,” according to CBS News.
Campaign spokeswoman Mia Ehrenberg confirmed, “He is absolutely not dropping out.”
Top Democrats, including Vice-President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom, supported Biden. Biden had a private lunch with Harris and plans to meet with Democratic governors, including Newsom, who will campaign for Biden in crucial states like Michigan and Pennsylvania. Early polls suggest Biden’s debate performance may have hurt his standing.
