A judge has delayed Donald Trump’s sentencing in his New York hush money case as Trump tries to get his conviction overturned. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling that gave him immunity in another case.
On Tuesday, Judge Juan Merchan announced he would decide on Trump’s motion to overturn the verdict on September 6 and postponed sentencing until September 18, if needed.
Trump’s lawyers acted quickly after the Supreme Court’s Monday ruling, which said Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for some official acts in his federal election interference case. They argued that Manhattan prosecutors used evidence from Trump’s office, making it inadmissible.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office agreed to the delay. This case was expected to be the only one of Trump’s four criminal cases to go to trial before the November election. Trump had been set for sentencing on July 11, just before the Republican National Convention.
Now, the verdict might be overturned two months before the election. The judge’s decision on this motion remains uncertain, as Trump’s conviction involves actions taken as a candidate, not as president.
