Vice President Kamala Harris has President Joe Biden’s support to become the next Democratic presidential nominee. If chosen, she would be the first Black woman and Asian American to lead a major political party.
Harris expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
This historic endorsement came after Biden announced on Sunday that he is dropping out of the race. Biden’s recent poor debate performance raised doubts about his ability to win a second term. Even with Biden’s support, it’s not sure if Harris will become the nominee or what process the Democratic Party will use to choose a different candidate.
As Biden’s running mate, Harris is the natural choice to take over. She would benefit from the Biden campaign’s large political operation and funding. Recent polls have shown that Harris is doing better against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, than Biden and other possible Democratic candidates.
