Chicago – July 29, 2024
Belal “Remember the Name” Muhammad made history as the first MMA fighter of Palestinian descent to win a UFC title. He took the welterweight crown from English champion Leon “Rocky” Edwards in a surprising upset at UFC 304 in Manchester, England.
The 36-year-old Chicago-born fighter, whose parents are Palestinian immigrants, won by unanimous decision after five rounds. The judges scored the fight 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 in Muhammad’s favor. His win stunned the MMA world, ending Edwards’ 12-fight winning streak and quieting the crowd at Co-op Live arena.
Muhammad’s victory came through his superior grappling skills, which impressed the judges. This win was especially meaningful as their 2021 fight ended in a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke by Edwards. Muhammad’s performance and determination led him to this historic achievement, marking a significant moment in MMA history.
