Ismail Haniyeh, the prominent Palestinian political leader, was assassinated in Tehran at the age of 62. The Palestinian group has labeled the incident as a “treacherous Zionist raid” on his residence.
Haniyeh, who briefly served as the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority in 2006, was killed early Wednesday morning along with a bodyguard. The attack occurred at the house where he was staying during a visit to Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian. This assassination comes nearly ten months into the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.
Haniyeh had been a significant figure in the Palestinian liberation movement and had long been a target for Israeli forces. Although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the assassination, an Israeli minister publicly praised Haniyeh’s death on social media. The killing marks a significant and controversial development in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
