A 43-year-old Philadelphia man, Raheem Jefferson, was tragically shot and killed while he was on his way to a prayer service at a local mosque, according to the police. The incident happened late Tuesday afternoon in a parking lot near the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society.
The shooter, described by witnesses as wearing dark clothing, approached Jefferson and fired at least 17 rounds from a large-caliber, semiautomatic weapon, hitting him in the head and torso. Police Chief Inspector Scott Small reported that surveillance footage captured Jefferson falling on a sidewalk while the shooter escaped in a dark-colored sedan, possibly with a small spare tire on the front passenger side.
Jefferson was rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away shortly after his arrival. As of now, the police and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office have not provided any details about why this awful event happened. They continue to investigate, hoping to learn more about the motive behind this senseless act.
