President Biden will meet with his national security team in the Situation Room on Monday ahead of a possible Iranian attack on Israel. Vice President Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic nominee for president, will also attend, according to the White House.
This meeting follows a call between Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday. They discussed U.S. support for Israel amid rising tensions with Iran and its allies after 10 months of conflict with Hamas militants in Gaza. The Pentagon said they talked about measures to protect U.S. forces in the area and de-escalate regional tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that Israel is now in a “multi-front war” with Iran and its proxies. Tensions soared after the recent killings of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas’ top leader in Iran, with Iran and its allies blaming Israel and threatening retaliation.
