Team USA’s women’s water polo team is still chasing their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal after defeating Hungary 5-4 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. They will now face Australia in Thursday’s semifinals. Earlier in the day, Australia beat Greece 9-6 to advance.
The match against Hungary was close, with Team USA holding a 3-2 lead at halftime. The score was tied 4-4 in the fourth quarter when Rachel Fattal, a three-time Olympian, scored the winning goal with 3:02 remaining.
The defense was key, as it was the lowest-scoring women’s water polo game of the Olympics so far. Team USA’s captain, Steffens, scored two goals, leading the team, while Johnson made 17 saves out of 21 shots at Paris La Défense Arena.
