On Wednesday, Turkey officially requested to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, as announced by the Turkish Foreign Ministry. This step, known as a declaration of official intervention, follows Turkey’s announcement in May about joining the case. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed the formal request on Wednesday.
Fidan emphasized the importance of the international community’s role in stopping the alleged genocide and pressuring Israel and its supporters. “Turkey will make every effort to do so,” he stated on X.
The ICJ will decide if Turkey can join the case. South Africa filed its case in December, accusing Israel of state-led genocide in Gaza. In January, the ICJ ordered Israel to avoid actions under the Genocide Convention and ensure no genocidal acts against Palestinians. Israel denies the genocide accusations, claiming its Gaza operations are for self-defence.
