Prominent Indian scholar and jurist, A.G. Noorani passed away today in Mumbai at 94. Known for his deep knowledge of Indian and global history, Noorani was admired for his dedication to human rights and international law. Despite his illness, he continued to work on a book criticizing a Supreme Court judgment until his final days.
Noorani’s expertise spanned many areas, including the history of India’s relationships with neighboring countries, the Indian Constitution, and various global judicial systems. He authored numerous books and articles that have become essential reading for students and experts alike.
He also had a special affection for Hyderabad, often praising its rich culture and delicious cuisine. Noorani had hoped his vast collection of papers and books would be housed in a major research library in Delhi, although recent changes at his preferred library made this uncertain.
His contributions to law, history, and human rights will be remembered by many as the work of a true intellectual.
