Election officials and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s team have criticized threats by Donald Trump to imprison “corrupt” election officials if he wins the election on November 5. They claim Trump’s threats are a form of intimidation and could encourage violence.
Trump, in a social media post, warned of severe legal actions against anyone involved in voter fraud for the 2024 election. However, studies show voter fraud is very rare in the U.S. He also continued to falsely claim that he lost the 2020 election due to fraud, which he had blamed for the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Arizona’s Democratic Secretary of State, Adrian Fontes, called Trump’s statement “tyrannical” and warned it could lead to political violence. A Republican county clerk in Michigan disagreed with Trump’s remarks but chose not to comment further to avoid giving them more attention. Trump’s campaign has not yet responded to these accusations. Kamala Harris’s spokesperson, Amman Moussa, described Trump’s comments as “extreme and unhinged,” emphasizing the danger of his threats.
