Chicago – September 12, 2024
Springfield, Ohio’s City Hall was evacuated on Thursday following a bomb threat. This comes just two days after former President Donald Trump made unfounded claims about the city in a national immigration debate. The city announced the closure on social media due to threats to multiple locations.
Mayor Rob Rue stated that the threat was made by an individual claiming to be from Springfield, expressing discontent with immigration issues. Despite the threat, there were no disturbances at the city hall, though police were present.
Recently, Springfield has been in the news after Trump and other Republicans incorrectly stated that the city’s immigrants were consuming household pets. Local authorities have debunked these claims. The city, with a population of 62,000, including about 15,000 Haitian immigrants, has seen economic growth and stable crime rates, contrary to the claims made during Trump’s debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Community leaders, particularly from the Haitian American group, have expressed concerns for their safety following these allegations.
