The Mexican government has begun transporting migrants to the U.S. border for appointments scheduled through a particular phone app created by the Biden administration. This app, called CBP One, helps up to 1,450 migrants daily to set up meetings at U.S. entry points where they might be allowed into the country under certain conditions.
The Mexican National Institute of Migration shared a video showing the first bus journey from Tapachula, near Guatemala, to Reynosa at the U.S. border. This service is part of Mexico’s new “Emerging Safe Mobility Corridor” aimed at helping migrants reach their U.S. appointments safely.
President Biden’s team expanded the CBP One app to make it easier for migrants to submit documents before their appointments and to promote safer, lawful ways to enter the U.S. It also lets 30,000 people from four specific countries fly directly to the U.S. after approval.
However, some Republicans criticize this approach, arguing that it improperly uses humanitarian parole, meant for urgent or beneficial cases, by allowing most migrants who apply to enter the U.S. Mexico offers those with confirmed appointments a temporary 20-day visa and provides them with transportation and food.
