Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was confirmed safe after a recent close call on his West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course. The FBI intervened during what seemed to be an assassination attempt while Trump was playing golf. Secret Service agents on the scene noticed a gunman hidden in the bushes along the property line, not far from Trump’s location.
They reported that the gunman fled after abandoning an AK-47-style rifle and other items, and although he initially escaped in a vehicle, he was apprehended shortly afterward.
This incident marks the second threat to Trump in two months, following a minor injury he sustained to his right ear at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. As the presidential campaign heats up, these events underscore the ongoing security challenges candidates face in a deeply divided country.
With just over seven weeks until the November 5th election, the security of presidential candidates remains a critical concern.
According to unnamed law enforcement officials cited by CNN, Fox News, and The New York Times, the suspect has been identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh from Hawaii. The FBI has declined to provide further comments on the matter.
