Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the chief minister of New Delhi, has announced his decision to resign. This announcement came just a day after he was released from prison on bail.
Kejriwal, a former anti-corruption activist and a strong critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led the AAP since its start ten years ago. Although his party is smaller than other opposition groups, it has gained significant attention in Indian politics.
The Supreme Court of India granted Kejriwal’s bail on Friday, and he left jail on Saturday. He had been detained for six months due to alleged issues with Delhi’s liquor policy. His bail terms prevent him from publicly stating the case, visiting his office, or signing official documents.
Despite stepping down, Kejriwal mentioned he would consider returning as chief minister if the public shows their trust in him through votes in the upcoming Delhi election. His party plans to meet later to decide who will replace him temporarily.
