American Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles and her legal team have appealed to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland regarding a bronze medal controversy from the Paris Games. Chiles initially won a bronze medal in the floor exercise after her coaches questioned her score, moving her from fifth to third place.
However, Romanian officials appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which reversed Chiles’ score and took away her medal. USA Gymnastics is supporting Chiles in her fight for justice.
This week, Chiles spoke about the situation during a panel at the Forbes Power Women Summit 2024, becoming emotional when discussing the incident. “To me, everything that has gone on is not about the medal, it’s about my skin color,” she said, visibly moved.
Chiles has previously mentioned facing “racially driven attacks” on social media after her win. When she earned the bronze medal, it marked the first time in Olympic history that three Black gymnasts stood together on the podium.
