A large group of people led by Imtiaz Jaleel, a former member of parliament, joined together for a protest called the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally.’ Over 12,000 people from the Muslim community, along with people from other groups, took part to ask for action against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and preacher Ramgiri Maharaj, who are said to have made offensive speeches.
The protest started in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where hundreds of vehicles traveled toward Mumbai on the Samruddhi Expressway. This caused a lot of traffic problems, which was a first for this expressway. The protestors aimed to reach Mumbai but were stopped at Mulund Check Naka late Monday night. They had to turn back after talking to some officials there.
There were many police officers, about 3,000, in Mumbai to make sure everything stayed calm. The protesters, who included people from the Dalit and Maratha communities, eventually left peacefully that night. Molana Toqeer Raza, one of the protest leaders, mentioned that even 1% of Muslims can make a significant impact.
