Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has announced plans for stricter asylum policies during her visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in Douglas, Arizona. Harris, currently the Vice President, argued that tougher measures are needed to manage illegal border crossings effectively.
Her proposals would make it more challenging to ease a current emergency order that allows the U.S. to deny entry to migrants without legal permission under overwhelming circumstances.
Harris emphasized the importance of maintaining an orderly and secure immigration system. She aims to alter the existing policy by setting a lower threshold of illegal crossings that must be met before considering reopening the border.
The current rule closes the border if unlawful crossings average 2,500 a day over a week but reopens it if the number falls below 1,500 daily crossings for a week. Harris’s plan would require even fewer crossings before reopening could occur.
Harris stated, “The United States is a sovereign nation, and I believe we must set rules at our border and enforce them. I take that responsibility very seriously.”
