Omar Abdullah was chosen as the leader of the National Conference’s legislative party shortly after winning 42 seats in the recent assembly elections.
Following a party meeting, Omar announced that four independent Legislative Assembly (MLAs) members had pledged their support to the National Conference, boosting its numbers in the 90-seat assembly to 46. The party’s ally, Congress, secured six seats.
The National Conference is now awaiting a formal letter of support from Congress to officially claim the right to form the next government in Jammu & Kashmir.
Omar thanked the legislators for trusting him to lead this effort. He mentioned that they would approach the Lieutenant Governor to stake their claim as soon as they received the letter from Congress.
The four independent MLAs supporting the National Conference are from the Jammu province, which is significant as this region primarily supported the BJP, giving them 29 out of 43 seats.
The independents won their seats where Congress had lost, highlighting a shift in voter support in those areas.
