Qatar has decided to pause its efforts to mediate a ceasefire in Gaza between Hamas and Israel, according to a recent statement from a Qatari official.
The decision comes as neither party has shown genuine interest in negotiations. This marks a significant setback in attempts to end the ongoing conflict that has lasted for over a year.
The official also noted that Qatar finds the Hamas political office in Doha to be ineffective following the recent assassinations of key Hamas leaders by Israel.
Qatar, along with the United States and Egypt, has been involved in several unsuccessful attempts to broker peace, including the latest in mid-October, where Hamas turned down a proposal for a short-term ceasefire.
Qatar has communicated its decision to all involved parties, including Hamas, Israel, and the United States. Following the rejection of the ceasefire and hostage negotiation proposal by Hamas, the U.S. has expressed its disapproval of Hamas’ continued presence in Doha.
This development indicates a potential shift in the diplomatic landscape surrounding the Gaza conflict.
