Chicago – November 10, 2024
Veterans Day, a significant federal holiday in the United States, is observed every year on November 11. This date marks the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. Celebrated regardless of which day of the week it falls on, Veterans Day honors all military veterans who have served the nation during war and peace times.
The tradition of commemorating this day began in 1919, originally called Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson marked the first anniversary of the end of World War I by reflecting on the heroism of those who died serving the country and appreciating the peace and justice that followed. In 1938, the day became an official federal holiday, and its name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize all U.S. military veterans.
This Monday, communities across the nation will celebrate Veterans Day with various events and activities, paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of military personnel from all branches of service.
