Republicans are gearing up for big changes in the 119th Congress with plans to pass a huge bill early next year. This bill aims to put President-elect Trump’s tax plans into action, cut down on government spending, and bring in conservative changes through a method called reconciliation.
Reconciliation lets lawmakers speed up the passing of certain types of laws—like those about taxes or spending—by requiring only a majority of 51 votes in the Senate, instead of the usual 60 votes.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana told fellow Republicans that they should think creatively to include as many reforms as possible in this bill, even though there are some limits on what can be included. The Republicans also want to add measures for tougher border security and fewer restrictions on American energy production.
House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington mentioned that their key goals are to boost the economy through regulatory reform and to overhaul border security and immigration. They also plan to address mandatory government spending to save money.
Arrington believes these efforts are sensible and necessary, and expects support from people across the political spectrum.
