President-elect Donald Trump has decided not to change his choice of Matt Gaetz for attorney general, despite some people not agreeing with his decision. Trump made this clear while he was in Boca Chica, Texas, watching a SpaceX rocket launch.
When reporters asked if he was thinking about picking someone else instead of Gaetz, Trump simply said “No” and walked away.
Trump did not comment on what steps he might take to make sure Gaetz gets approved. Gaetz, who was previously a congressman, could face challenges during the confirmation hearings next year.
This is partly because there was an investigation into his actions by the House Ethics Committee starting in 2021. However, if Gaetz leaves Congress to join Trump’s administration, the committee will stop its investigation and won’t release any reports.
To help his chances of becoming attorney general, Gaetz has been talking to Senate Republicans. He needs only a few of their votes to stop his nomination from going through. This is important because the Senate decides if a president’s choice for jobs like attorney general is okay or not.
