A Republican senator, Mike Rounds from South Dakota, introduced a new law called the “Returning Education to Our States Act” on Thursday. This law aims to shut down the Department of Education. Senator Rounds wants other departments to take over the duties that the Department of Education currently handles.
This move comes after President-elect Trump, during his 2024 campaign, expressed his desire to close the Department of Education. He believes that education should be managed by the states instead of being controlled by a federal department in Washington, D.C. Trump thinks that local teachers and schools understand what students need better than the federal government.
Senator Rounds mentioned that the Department of Education hasn’t directly taught any students and it would be better to end it. He supports local control over education, saying that people in South Dakota remember teachers who significantly influenced their learning. He argues that local school boards and state education departments are more aware of their students’ needs.
Additionally, Trump plans to appoint Linda McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and previous Administrator of the Small Business Administration, as the Secretary of Education.
