Chicago – November 23, 2024
The scheduled sentencing for President-elect Donald Trump in his New York hush money case was canceled on Friday. The decision comes after Trump’s recent victory in the November election. He was originally set to be sentenced on Tuesday, November 26.
Judge Juan Merchan issued a one-page order directing Trump to file a formal motion to dismiss the case by December 2. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg must then respond by December 9. Trump has signaled plans to seek a dismissal of the case, citing the need to focus on transferring presidential power after his election win.
Merchan still has to decide whether to dismiss the case or proceed with sentencing. If the case isn’t dismissed, both Trump and Bragg’s office could appeal.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, called the decision a “decisive win.” He added, “All the fake legal attacks against President Trump are falling apart, and we’re focused on Making America Great Again.”
