Liberal comedian Bill Maher discussed the “silver lining” of Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 election, arguing that America is not as divided as the media suggests. On his “Club Random” podcast, Maher and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith criticized the Democratic Party for being overly focused on identity politics.
Smith, in particular, criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for not recognizing that many Latino voters opposed open borders. “You didn’t know Latinos wanted the border closed?” he asked, pointing out her experience in California.
Maher added that the election results showed the country is less racially divided than commonly believed, noting that Trump managed to win support from different voter groups, including Latino and Black men. “Trump won Latino men,” Maher said, referring to a 13% jump in Latino male voters for Trump, and a 5% increase in Black support, especially among Black men.
Smith agreed, saying that America is more centrist than the media portrays, with most people leaning center-left or center-right, while the extreme right and left represent smaller, fringe groups.
