Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat and member of “The Squad,” used the Thanksgiving holiday to criticize the actions of European settlers and the United States toward Indigenous people.
In a post on Instagram, she said, “This Thanksgiving, we mourn the Indigenous people killed by European settlers and the United States to steal their land.” The post, credited to a pro-Palestinian group, also expressed solidarity with Indigenous people fighting for freedom, connecting it to the situation in Palestine.
Tlaib, a Palestinian American, has been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian statehood. Last month, she called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “genocidal maniac” and accused him of committing atrocities during the Israel-Hamas conflict. She has also been critical of the Biden administration’s response to the situation in Gaza.
In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, Tlaib has declined to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, encouraging Michigan voters to participate in the election without mentioning Harris by name.
