Farmers protesting in Punjab on Friday paused their march to Delhi after several of them were injured by teargas shells fired by security forces. The incident occurred at the Shambhu border, where six protesters were hurt when Haryana Police and paramilitary forces used teargas to stop them from advancing.
The farmers had started their march from the Shambhu border with a group of 101 protesters, known as ‘Marjeevda Jatha’. However, they were blocked by multiple layers of barricades just meters away. Haryana Police enforced a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, preventing them from moving forward.
The farmers are demanding that the government guarantee a legal minimum support price (MSP) for crops. They have announced that they will resume their march on Sunday, as Delhi Police tighten security at the borders in anticipation of their arrival. The farmers are determined to press their demands for better protection of their livelihoods.
