President-elect Donald Trump warned on Saturday that the United States should avoid getting involved in the latest conflict in Syria. The conflict has seen rebel forces opposing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad launch a new offensive in the ongoing civil war.
Trump shared his opinion on the issue in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “Syria is a mess, but is not our friend. THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
Trump also argued that Russia, which has been a supporter of Assad, is too distracted by its ongoing war in Ukraine to effectively defend Syria. He suggested that Russia’s potential withdrawal from Syria could actually benefit the region, as there was never much of a strategic advantage for Russia there.
Meanwhile, leaders from Russia, Turkey, and Iran are set to meet in Doha on Saturday to discuss the renewed conflict and explore possible solutions.
