Tripura is a northeastern state with a history of peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims. Now the residents are seeing rising religious tensions under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The state, where Muslims make up about 9% of the population, has traditionally avoided major inter-religious clashes. However, recent incidents suggest a disturbing shift, with many local Muslims feeling increasingly marginalized and targeted.
Under the BJP, religious intolerance has become more pronounced across India, and Tripura seems to be following suit. The ruling party’s policies and rhetoric have been criticized for fostering an environment of anti-Muslim sentiment.
While Tripura once stood as an example of harmonious coexistence, the rise in communal tensions in areas like Kadamtala – where a simple dispute between a Muslim driver and a Hindu club led to violence – raises concerns about the state’s future under BJP rule.
As Tripura grapples with these issues, there are growing fears that religious divisions will deepen further, threatening the state’s legacy of peace.
