A U.S. senator has demanded that mysterious drones spotted flying over sensitive areas in New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic region be “shot down, if necessary,” amid growing concerns over their presence. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut expressed alarm over the drones, especially those flying near airports and military bases, calling for urgent intelligence analysis and action.
Blumenthal also raised concerns about potential interference with commercial airlines, urging more transparency from the Biden administration. However, the White House responded by stating that many of the reported sightings were likely manned aircraft being flown lawfully, with no incidents occurring in restricted airspace. John Kirby, National Security Council spokesperson, added that the U.S. Coast Guard found no foreign involvement.
The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are actively investigating the situation, working with the New Jersey State Police to determine if the sightings are actually drones or manned aircraft. While no electronic detection has confirmed the presence of drones, officials noted that traditional methods like radio and helicopter detection have failed to identify them.
The number of reported sightings has increased recently, but some may have been misidentified aircraft, raising questions about the true nature of the incidents.
