Even though President-elect Donald Trump won’t be on the ballot in the 2026 midterm elections, he is expected to play a major role in supporting Republican candidates. Michael Whatley, the chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), said that Trump’s influence will be “significant” in helping the GOP maintain control of the House and Senate.
Whatley believes that Trump’s support will help Republicans keep pushing forward with the policies he started during his time in office.
Republicans had big wins in the 2024 elections. Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to win the White House, and the GOP also flipped control of the Senate while holding on to a narrow majority in the House. However, it’s common for the party in power to face challenges in midterm elections, especially after a strong election victory.
Whatley said that while Trump won’t be running for office again in 2026, his impact on the campaign trail will be felt. He will continue to push for the agenda he worked on during his presidency. Additionally, Whatley is confident that the GOP will have more money for campaigning in the midterms, which could help them compete with the Democratic Party’s fundraising efforts.
Though Trump is term-limited and can’t run for president again in 2028, many believe his legacy and influence will still be strong for years to come.
