President-elect Trump has criticized the Panama Canal’s toll system, claiming that the US is being taken advantage of due to high prices. Trump expressed his concerns in a recent social media post, stating that the canal’s tolls, which can range from three to six figures, are unfair to American ships.
The Panama Canal is a vital waterway that plays a critical role in the US economy and national security. Trump emphasized the importance of a secure canal, citing its impact on US commerce and the rapid deployment of the Navy.
Trump also criticized former President Carter for signing the Panama Canal Treaty in 1977, which phased out US control of the canal by 1999. Trump suggested that the US should demand ownership of the canal if American ships are not treated fairly.
It’s worth noting that the Panama Canal has recently simplified its toll structure, reducing the number of tariffs from 430 to fewer than 60. The new structure aims to provide greater visibility and predictability to customers.
