U.S. Plans to Leave WHO in 2026 After Trump’s Decision
The United States will officially leave the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22, 2026, according to the United Nations. The announcement came after President Donald Trump notified the U.N. of his decision, accusing the WHO of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises.
Trump announced the withdrawal on Monday, just hours after beginning his second term as president. The WHO, which receives about 18% of its funding from the U.S., expressed regret over the move. The U.S. is the organization’s largest donor, and the WHO’s 2024-2025 budget is $6.8 billion. It is unclear how much the U.S. still owes in dues.
Deputy U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq confirmed receiving the U.S. withdrawal letter, dated January 22, 2025. Under the rules, the departure will take effect one year later, on January 22, 2026. Experts warn this decision could harm important programs, especially those fighting tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other global health emergencies.
The withdrawal order also stated that the U.S. would stop negotiations on the WHO’s pandemic treaty and reassign government staff working with the organization. The U.S. plans to find other partners to handle key health programs currently supported by the WHO.
