Chicago – March 09, 2025

Mark Carney, the former central banker, has won the race to lead Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and will succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister, according to official results released on Sunday. Carney, 59, secured 86% of the vote, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in a contest with nearly 152,000 party members casting ballots.

Carney takes over at a challenging time for Canada, which is embroiled in a trade dispute with the United States under President Donald Trump. With a general election approaching, Carney, a political outsider, promises to take bold action.

“There’s someone trying to weaken our economy,” Carney said, referring to Trump’s actions that have targeted Canadian workers and businesses. He vowed to fight back and said, “This won’t be business as usual.”

Carney, who has no direct political background, argued that his experience as the governor of Canada’s and England’s central banks made him the right person to handle trade negotiations with Trump, who has threatened more tariffs on Canadian goods.

Carney pledged to maintain retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. until Canada is treated with respect. His victory marks a historic moment, as he is the first outsider with no political experience to become Canada’s prime minister.
