Mark Carney, former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has secured a decisive victory in the Liberal Party leadership race, obtaining 85.9% of the vote. This win makes him the successor to Justin Trudeau as Canada’s 24th prime minister.

Carney’s leadership comes at a critical time, as Canada faces rising tensions with the United States. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and made remarks suggesting Canada’s annexation as the 51st U.S. state. In response, Carney has vowed to defend Canada’s sovereignty and economic interests, emphasizing that such threats “will destroy our way of life.”

Despite lacking prior political experience, Carney’s extensive background in global finance is expected to shape his governance approach. As Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 financial crisis, Carney guided Canada through a turbulent economic period, protecting jobs and ensuring the country’s economic resilience.
